Image
Crime and Punishment By Nicholas Reardon ISBN-13 :  9781874192749 Crime and Punishment in and about the Cotswold Hills This fully illustrated colour book shows the reader in Photographs and Sketches old time punishments such as stocks, whipping posts and lock-ups along with stories of murdered Kings and Court Jesters, Highwaymen and War Crimes committed long ago, when the Cotswold hills were not so peaceful. Having lived in the Cotswolds all my life, and with a keen interest in history, I would like to share my love of this area with you by pointing out some of the hidden features to be found in this unique part of the English countryside. Over the years my father, the well-known Cotswold artist Peter Reardon, had drawn a number of little sketches showing stocks, whipping posts and old town lock-ups. These illustrated the historic types of punishment served up to those who broke the law in and around these lovely and now peaceful hills. ...

Brexit has paralysed the system

Brexit has paralysed the system Channel 4 News SUBSCRIBE  680K The urge to leave and the desire to remain, to paraphrase one of our guests, they are both elements of the same country... sometimes even at war within ourselves. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe ) Peter Oborne and Melissa Kite join the programme. Peter Oborne today published an article that reads like a roadmap to Damascus: "Brexit has paralysed the system. It has turned Britain into a laughing stock. And it is certain to make us poorer and to lead to lower incomes and lost jobs. We Brexiteers would be wise to acknowledge all this." We asked him why he'd changed his mind about Brexit?

The Cotswolds: Spectacular Images Showing the Ever-changing Seasons

THE COTSWOLDS  ISBN 9781874192794 The Cotswolds: Spectacular Images Showing the Ever-changing Seasons Nicholas Reardon REVIEW: "The Cotswolds" which I was fortunate to have won from Goodreads Giveaways is a breathtaking exploration of the natural beauty of the countryside throughout the seasons. With a treasure trove of photographs Nicholas Reardon guides us from the past to the present, from the modern to the historic, and from wildlife to pastoral scenes, giving us a yearning to discover the beauty and majesty of this beautiful place for ourselves. The images don't need words to bring home hidden wonders like water pouring from the mouth of a crocodile head, fearsome gargoyles encrusted with age or the grandeur of ancient ruins and stately old homes. With clever dexterity he juxtaposes images against one another giving depth to his perception, like the antiquities of a museum, the natural simplicity and clarity of the moon against a man-made church...

A Halloween Brexit: UK and EU agree Brexit delay to 31 October

A Halloween Brexit:  UK and EU agree Brexit delay to 31 October Image copyright REUTERS The UK and the EU have agreed a "flexible extension" of Brexit until 31 October, European Council president Donald Tusk has said. The agreement was reached after five hours of talks at an emergency EU summit in Brussels. Mr Tusk said his "message to British friends" would be "please do not waste this time". Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said the UK must now hold European elections in May, or leave on 1 June without a deal. The PM had earlier told leaders she wanted to move the UK's exit date from this Friday to 30 June, with the option of moving that date forward again if she can get her withdrawal agreement ratified by Parliament. Mr Tusk emerged from the talks - and a subsequent meeting with Mrs May - to address reporters at a news conference at 02:15 local time (01:15 BST). He said: "The course of action will be entirely in the...

Brexit is finished. A Leave constituency just voted in a Remain MP

Brexit is finished. A Leave constituency just voted in a Remain MP Only a handful of lunatics still want Brexit - it's game over, gammons We had a vote. Leave has lost. Get over it. "Oh bloody hell, it's us next isn't it"   (Image: Getty) The fact a 56%-Leave constituency just chose a Remain campaigner who  wants a people's vote  to be its MP is delicious. But joy must be tempered by the fact that, to hardline Brexit wingnuts, 'irony' could refer to broccoli, the Earth's core, or something the metropolitan elite uses as a weapon. The turnout was low. The majority was cut. UKIP put on 8%. And besides, if you stuck a red rosette on a house brick it could get elected in Wales, they'll say. But there's more at work in the by-election of Ruth Jones than the Brexit campaigners want you to notice. Newport is a former steel town and its docks were used to export coal. It has needed decades of regeneration. The accepted opinion ...
