Talking exclusively to the Evening Standard, the campaigning journalist said she will stand in the South West region for Change UK, the pro-Remain party set up by The Independent Group of MPs. Julie Girling MEP Why I won't be standing in the European Elections

22 April 2019.  Embargo: None Julie Girling MEP   Why I won't be standing  in the European Elections    I have been following the online debate about how to maximise the "Remain Vote" in the coming European Elections with increasing dismay. I have decided to simplify the decision for the large numbers of constituents who have pledged their support to me personally by not accepting a place on the candidates list for Change UK. I would encourage my supporters to vote for candidates who have a proven record in the European Parliament and represent a party with a clear pro second referendum pledge. I have been an MEP for 10 years and it has been a great privilege to serve the people of the South West and Gibraltar. I would like to thank you all for your support. Brexit chaos: govt confirms ERG Irish border 'solution' is a pack of lies Now, the European Research Group (ERG), which backs a "clean-break Brexit", has suggested another way, which avoids the need to follow all those EU rules. Jacob Rees-Mogg, who chairs the ERG, said it provided a solution for the Irish border "in a way that any reasonable person would think meets the requirements of the European Union's concerns over the single market". It has similarities to an earlier government plan, which proposed the continuation of some existing UK-EU arrangements and the use of technology to make it easier to comply with customs procedures. The Irish border: Brexit's 310-mile problem Reality Check: The Brexit challenge for Irish trade Reality Check: How much trade is there between UK and Ireland? Perhaps the most difficult issue for the Irish border is the movement of food and agriculture products. Those products are the major co...
